Hamburg is a port city in northern Germany.

The act of kindness was made on the third and final day of Charles' three-day visit to Germany. This was the first official journey Charles had taken outside of the UK since he succeeded his father as king of England last year.It occurs just before the 80th anniversary of the "Operation Gomorrah" allied bombardment of Hamburg in July, which resulted in the deaths of about 40,000 people and the destruction of large portions of the city.

In an attempt to destroy German industry, the Allies dropped about 1.9 million tonnes of bombs on Germany in response to Nazi air raids on civilian targets in Poland and subsequently London. In the allied assaults, 500,000 people perished. At the Kindertransporte memorial earlier, Charles also paid his respects. The Kindertransporte was a rescue effort that enabled 10,000 Jewish children to escape Nazi-occupied Europe in the late 1930s, with the majority making their way to Britain.
