Election date: SC can change if parties agree on a position

Election date: SC can change if parties agree on a position

Election date: SC can change if parties agree on a positionWho will ensure that everything will be calm on October 8? the chief justice queries.On Wednesday, Chief Justice Umer Ata Bandial stated that the Supreme Court may reschedule the election date if all political parties could come to an agreement.The AG argued that if the court allowed additional time, the issue may eventually be settled. The CJP acknowledged the AG's position at this point and said, "If the political parties unite, the court can make place for them and adjust the election date. Election day will be May 14 if not before. This situation shouldn't be left unattended.
Later, in conjunction with organising elections for the Punjab and KP legislatures, the Supreme Court issued notifications to all political parties, including Jamaat-e-Islami.The Federation of Pakistan, Law and Justice Division, through its secretary, and other parties were included as respondents in petitions Kashif Khan and others filed with the Supreme Court. Shah Khawar, an advocate and the legal representative for one of the petitioners, said before the court that cooperation and respect between the political parties running in the general elections are essential to guaranteeing peaceful, honest, just, and fair elections. He argued that historically, simultaneous elections for the National Assembly and four provincial assemblies had produced more lasting results than the staggered polls for the two provincial assemblies that were planned at the time.The court order, however, stated that: "Prima facie, the submission made by the learned counsel appears to have substance because elections are contested in the political arena and these can be best conducted with the feedback and input of all electoral political forces in the country would contest in such elections.The court, however, believes that the other course suggested by the attorney cannot be used to overturn or change the date set by the court in its judgement from April 4, 2023, which is in accordance with the Constitution, for the conduct of general elections to the Punjab Assembly.The court stated that political discussion should not be used as a way to get out of holding a general election for a provincial legislature within 90 days after its dissolution, which is a requirement under articles 112 and 224 of the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. The petitioner's idea to suggest the beginning of political debate as a method of determining a realistic and workable date for general constitutional petition elections that meet the requirements of Article 218(3) of the Constitution was applauded by the court. All political parties have been given notifications by the court to arrange for their representation through senior office holders who have been properly permitted and directed to attend in person before the court today (Thursday).
