- Back 18 dead as severe weather, cyclones severely harm central US
- WASHINGTON: After generating tornadoes and extremely damaging winds across several central states, a significant storm system made its way towards the US east coast on Saturday, killing at least 18 people. At least five persons were killed by tornadoes that tore through Arkansas on Friday, including in the state's capital, Little Rock, according to the governor of the region. There have reportedly been numerous other injuries. In the affected areas, daylight showed extensive damage, including numerous homes destroyed, overturned cars, and uprooted trees.Additionally, the National Weather Service had issued tornado alerts for a number of other states, ranging from as far north as Iowa to as far south as Mississippi, where just last week a twister claimed 25 lives and left significant property damage. A heavy metal band was performing inside the Apollo Theater when disaster struck in the Illinois town of Belvidere, which is located outside of Chicago, when severe weather caused the roof and a portion of the facade to fall.
- While social media videos showed rubble -- some nearly waist-high -- on the music venue's floor and a gaping hole in the roof, TV footage showed emergency workers carrying out injured concertgoers on stretchers. Shawn Schadle, the fire chief for Belvidere, Illinois, reported one fatality and 28 injuries, including five patients who required hospitalisation for severe wounds. According to local authorities, several US media outlets stated that a storm in Sullivan County in the neighbouring state of Indiana killed three people. According to emergency authorities, overnight tornadoes also claimed one life each in Madison County, Alabama, and Pontotoc County, Mississippi.
